〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Soma Cruz
CHARACTER AGE: 18
CANON ORIGIN: Castlevania
CHRONOLOGY: Post Aria of Sorrow
CLASS: Tragic hero
HOUSING: Maurita Falls or De Chima; my other two are in Heropa already, and that's more than enough juggling on people that can't meet.

BACKGROUND: Soma's specific background, but also Dracula's background is important, and well as Mathias, in order to fully understand who/what he is.

Soma's from a world where monsters that go bump in the night very much exist. In the year 1999, Dracula was finally defeated by the last surviving member of the Belmont clan, and his demonic castle was imprisoned behind a solar eclipse. But Dracula never dies; aspects of himself shot out and joined with various individuals around the world that were born at the time of his death, with the exception of his very soul, which lingered until eventually it was reincarnated as Soma in 2017. Though Soma will eventually be drawn into Dracula's castle and destroy the core of darkness that binds it to Dracula (and in turn, Soma himself), it does not eliminate the fact that he is, essentially, the new Dracula.

PERSONALITY:
On first glance, Soma comes off as an unapproachable loaner. His unique appearance and air of modern reality make others almost afraid to approach him, and Soma does not go out of his way to approach them first. He often feels out of place in large social situations, and appears uninterested in talking to people. This couldn't be any farther from the truth, however; in reality, he's just a shy person, unwilling to associate with people he doesn't know unless they approach him first. He is much more active and comfortable within a small circle of friends, especially so when Mina is present.

At the start of Aria, Soma comes off as easily startled and shaken by the horrific surroundings he finds himself in, and more than willing to trust a fellow human being, no matter what their ill intentions may be. The perfect example of this is when he first meets Graham, and he's stammering while asking if he's human, before proceeding to give him more information than he probably should. As his power grew, however, so too did his ability to feel comfortable around monsters, particularly those closely linked to Dracula. His naivety never really went away, however, and he still tends to be more trusting of humans, though he's warier of those that are very obviously evil now.

The fact that he is Dracula reborn is a bit of a sticking point for Soma. He has accepted this as his reality by his canon point, but it's something that bothers him, and makes him question whether or not he should be resisting the urge to actually become the Dark Lord; his reasoning being that because Dracula has been so omnipresent in the world, what right does he have to hold this back. As Dracula was a vampire, and he is capable of holding the souls of monsters within himself and calling on them to be used, Soma really questions his humanity. The more he uses his powers, the less he feels like he should be among other human beings, though he would never admit this. He also has a lot of trouble understanding that just because his powers are dark, doesn't mean that they're evil; what his power is aligned with is entirely dependent on how he uses it.

Soma is a very kind individual, and also very protective of his friends. He would do literally anything for them, even throwing himself back into the way of danger, even if he's the one that's more likely to be killed or corrupted. This is a trait he shares very closely with Dracula, as much of his motivation behind his evil deeds was done out of love, or the loss of those he loved. He would never willingly fight another human being, and outright hates the thought, to the point of initially refusing to do so. If he doesn't have any other choice, he will fight, but he really needs to be pressed in order to do so.

He is also a bit of a dork; Soma can be made to blush really easily. Neither Yoko or Hammer need to try really hard to get him embarrassed, especially when either of them point out how fond of Mina he is. He is also easily exasperated, especially so by Hammer's womanizing antics, while Genya Arikado is an endless source of frustration for him. Not only is he dealing with the fact that he knows, in the back of his mind, that Arikado is actually Alucard, the son of Dracula, but the man is also insanely cryptic and refuses to be straightforward with information, to the point where Soma is purposefully left in the dark.

When Soma turns into Dracula, however, things are very different. As Dracula, he's very blunt, arrogant, and uncaring. He is the reborn vampire that persisted on and off for almost a thousand years; he's better than any human, and he has every right to make sure everyone around him knows it. He loses his concern for fighting and killing human beings, and is absolutely vicious when doing so. In fact, his hatred for God and humans is outright malicious, as he is still feeding off the unfathomable loss and resulting rage that came from the deaths of Mathias' wife, Elizabetha, and also Lisa, whom Dracula loved and married four hundred years later. He is viciously cruel and indifferent to whatever suffering he inflicts, because nothing he does to another being could ever come to match the suffering he's felt in the past. In fact, the only time he ever shows regret for his actions is in the defeat he suffers after his rampage following Lisa's death, as he knew his response was not what she would have wanted.

Soma as Dracula only differs from the original in one respect. While the original Dracula was respectful to his subordinates to the point of almost being kind, Soma is not. He is much more malevolent in nature, to the point where he would even kill his loyal followers. Though after his canon point, Celia from Dawn of Sorrow gets to experience this first hand; though she does everything in her power to force Soma to awaken as the Dark Lord, he brutally murders her, largely because he found her annoying. Despite this viciousness, he still maintains his weakness for the person he loves; Mina would literally be the only person safe from Soma in this state.

Overall, Soma is a kind teenager, forced into a situation that was difficult to understand. He came out of it stronger, though burdened with a dark destiny that he's determined not to repeat, but otherwise unsure what to do with, or what it means for him in the future.

POWER:
Power of Dominance
Soma has the Power of Dominance, a dark power -- though not necessarily evil power -- that allows him to possess, control, and summon the souls of defeated demons, and is the same as Dracula's primary power to command monsters. Every time he defeats a monster, he has a chance to absorb their soul, and thereby obtain its power. Each monster soul can be broken down into three common categories:

Red Bullet Souls: The main attack force of Soma's abilities.
Blue Guardian Souls: Protective souls that guard Soma, grant healing abilities, and allow him to transform, among other things.
Yellow Enchanted Souls: Essentially support souls that are always active, and grant Soma additional protection.
Silver Ability Souls: Souls that enhance Soma's movement.

With the exception of ability souls, only one of each type of soul can be equipped and used at any time, though Soma can change souls on the fly if given a few seconds. The number of monsters and demons in the world is vast, and Soma has been forced to defeat them all. To keep him from being over powered, he will be limited to the following abilities:

Bullet Souls
* Winged Skeleton: Summons a spear that is flung at an enemy.
* Skull Archer: Summons an enchanted bow and arrow that fires at enemies.
* Flame Demon: Allows Soma to call on ultra hot balls of flame to burn his enemies.
* Ukoback: Allows Soma to summon a ball of flame and set it in place. The fire disappears only when Soma wants it to, or when someone touches it.
* Lightning Doll: Allows Soma to summon lightning, and shoot it at enemies from his finger tips.
* Chronomage: Allows Soma to stop time very briefly (a few seconds or so).
Guardian Souls
* Imp: Summons an imp familiar that will protect Soma from nearby enemies. The imp has a bit of a snarky personality, though isn't aware of much outside of his need to serve Soma.
* Bone Pillar: Radiates flames around Soma, protecting him and setting anyone that touches it on fire.
* Giant Ghost: Forms a protective barrier around Soma.
* Black Panther: Allows Soma to move at high speed, creating a damaging shock wave around him.
* Giant Bat: Allows Soma to transform into a bat and fly.
* Death: Summons the grim reaper's scythe to circle around Soma, cutting down any enemy that comes close.
Enchant Souls
* Succubus: Drains an enemy's life with each normal attack, healing Soma.
* Lubicant: The more Soma is injured, the more his strength increases (resets when unequipped).
Ability Souls
* Galamoth: Enables Soma to recognize areas where time has been stopped.

Vamparism
While the Dracula that was Mathias Cronqvist has been defeated, the power of Dracula persisted after death and was reborn in Soma; not only has he inherited his abilities, but also what he is, memories and the emotions attached to them included. However, Soma is just a normal human being... at least most of the time. In canon, there are two ways that this can change: either Soma can absorb too much dark power within himself from his Power of Dominance, forcing the breakdown of the Ego that makes him "Soma", or his emotions can run so high that he willingly gives in to the hatred and sadness of his past. When this happens, he becomes the egotistical, goblet tossing, vampiric jerk that is Dracula. He seems to have very little control of himself and doesn't care about anything, lashing out at everything around him with a thousand years worth of instinct, even if they are his loyal followers. He will develop fangs, his eyes will turn red, and only blood will be able to satiate him. He will maintain the Power of Dominance in this form, and gain the ability to use Dracula's signature Hellfire, which summons three massive balls of flame from Hell.

In Mask or Menace, to keep with canon as close as possible and still have this happen, Soma will at first experience the vampiric change only during the New Moon, where the darkness of night is too powerful for him to resist. At first, Soma will be unable to control himself, and unless he prepares for it during the day, he won't be able to keep himself from wrecking havoc during the night. However, the day time will negate this, and Soma will return to normal.

As time wears on and the more Soma changes, the more time he'll have to process the nearly thousand years of memories coming from the part of him that is Dracula. Eventually he'll start changing during nights where there are small slivers of moonlight, and he'll start becoming more aware of what's happening around him. Eventually, he'll fully process what he is and accept the fact that his powers are dark, not inherently evil. When this happens, he'll not only be able to control when he changes, but also be fully cognizant of his actions. These changes will take time and character development before they can happen, and the stipulation that he can only change at night will always remain.

FINAL NOTES: As of right now, I'm unsure if the Netflix series will get as far as Soma's story arc, but if they do, I would like to switch Soma's backstory over to that. Unfortunately, Soma's games came out just at the point where Konami really started to show they didn't care about their English speaking audience; there are a lot of painful inconsistencies in his background, and even more things that don't make sense. This shouldn't affect his personality any, but it would make saying where he comes from a lot easier to mention in future threads.
